As I recently ranted, there are a million “national holidays” with indiscernible origins, but which seem to be shrouded in the smoke of trade association conjuring. Last week’s National Hat Day was surely a ploy by the Headwear Association to get us all shopping at Hats in the Belfry. Today’s special, National Popcorn Day, might just have been cooked (I mean “popped”) up by the Popcorn Board, which is oddly silent on the subject.

I don’t like to unwittingly sprew corporate advertising, but, gosh darn in, the national holidays that keep popping up (sorry, couldn’t resist) seem worthy of celebration. I mean, who doesn’t love hats? Who doesn’t love ginger (Feb 22)? Who doesn’t love cowboys (July 24)? And, for today, who doesn’t love popcorn?!

So, in honor of a most delicious food that can also, incidentally (January is apparently “National Diet Month”), be a healthy snack, I bring you the recipe for “Perfect Popcorn” from that wizard of the kitchen, Alton Brown:

Ingredients

* 3 tablespoons peanut oil
* 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
* 1/2 teaspoon popcorn salt
* 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

Directions

* Put the oil, popcorn and salt in a large metal mixing bowl. Cover with heavy-duty aluminum foil. Poke ten holes in the foil.
* Hold the bowl over medium heat with a pair of tongs, shaking constantly. Keep shaking until the corn stops popping, which will take approximately three minutes.
* Remove the bowl from the heat and carefully peel away the foil. Incorporate any salt that has stuck to the side of the bowl.
* Melt the butter, in the microwave or in a pan, and drizzle over the popcorn while turning the bowl.

Of course, if you’re celebrating National Diet Month, you might want to skip that last step.

Another point: while the immediate focus has to be relief the long term need is development in Haiti. Critics of aid are right that there are real concerns about aid dependency, and Haiti is one of the places we can see them. And in theory Haiti should be more promising than some other poor countries in the world, because of its location. There should be ways of parlaying Haiti’s status as an island nation close to the biggest consumer market in the world into manufacturing opportunities. Paul Collier, the former chief economist at the World Bank, investigated Haiti’s possibilities for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon a year ago and reported back that the best hope for Haiti was to encourage manufacturing (of garments, for example) aimed at the US market. That is indeed something that we should be pushing for the medium term, and one risk is that the focus on all the poverty and instability — and the insecurity that is likely to become a big problem in the coming weeks — will discourage the investment that is needed.

For those interested in helping Haiti, by the way, readers have sent in excellent suggestions in response to my last blog post. Go for it. (Note: I’ve tweaked both the numbers and the wording about Limbaugh since this first went up; my Limbaugh wording at first may have overstated his position.)

Now it’s true that Haiti has had lousy leadership and lousy governance. But doesn’t it seem rather unfair to tell a kid he’s not going to get his broken leg set because his country has a legacy of bad leaders?

I was delighted that the White House denounced as “utterly stupid” the Rev. Pat Robertson’s suggestion that Haiti had suffered its earthquake because it had made a “pact with the devil,” and as “really stupid” the comment by Rush Limbaugh that Americans already donate to Haiti through tax dollars — which many took to mean that he discouraged giving, a suggestion he has strongly denied. In any case, I think those comments may reflect a current that many people think even if they don’t articulate, something like this: Those Haitians have screwed up their country, and we already pour money into their economy. We have our troubles at home, we have our needs, so why should our hard-earned dollars go to support Haitians who don’t help themselves. We’ve already been generous, and it hasn’t worked.

First, a fact check. In 2008, the most recent year for which we have figures, the United States donated 92 cents per American to Haiti. Granted, any year can fluctuate, so look at three-year totals. The United States contributed $2.32 per American to Haiti over the last three years for which we have data (about 80 cents a year). That’s much less than other countries do, even though Haiti is in our hemisphere and has historic close ties to the U.S. For example, Canada contributed $12.13 per person to Haiti over three years, and Norway sent $8.44. (Those figures are from David Roodman at the Center for Global Development, and in a previous version of this post I mistakenly said that they were per year.) Other countries that contribute more, per capita, to Haiti than the U.S. are Luxembourg, Sweden, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Spain and Belgium. True, there are more Americans, so collectively our aid amounts to more than one-quarter of the pot in Haiti, but that’s only because we’re such a big country. Given the per capita sums, we have no right to be bragging about our generosity in Haiti.

Grease Monkey Wipes is a division of Kong Concepts LLC, which was created by frustrated cyclists who looking for an easy-to-use and portable wipe to clean up their greasy hands after changing a flat tire. The cleaning wipes use a natural degreaser for heavy duty cleaning. Cyclists can keep a pack of them in the Saddlebag for tire changes in winter. The wipe can be used to remove the excess of lube from the chain-stay. Not just that, wipe could be handy for bikes as well, when there is a chain drop while assembling your bike. Grease Monkey Wipes are a versatile piece to use whenever need to ged rid of blackened greasy spots of goo. Those who were watching Erin and Tim’s demo might predict the benefits of Grease Monkey Wipes.

Until recent past grease monkey was a Firefox add-on for me to play all the hacks and tricks. Well, things changed overnight as I came across Grease Monkey Wipes. This was another popular product, unfurled on the ABC Reality Show, Shark Tank. I’m sure you must be wondering whether the products have any distant relationship. Overtly, there nothing in common except that both are monkey-descendants, lol. Most of you must be gung ho to dig out – what is actually Grease Monkey Wipes.

Jay Jimmy: “What is the largest number of lapdances you have in one night?”

Jimmy Kimmel was a guest on the video ‘and Jay Leno Show’ on Thursday night, and was supposed to be just a guest Jay is a natural ‘ten out of ten’ section, where one asks ten questions. With nearly all of the answer, but, Kimmel was able to find a way for the development of response to some form of insult to Leno. While Jay took on a good step, and the answers were so anti-Leno, we really wonder whether the pre-planned, or an act of pure contempt for Leno. Watch and tell us what you think!

Jay Jimmy: “You know Pranks … What is the best joke you’ve pulled out of the ever?”

Jimmy reply: “NBC has ordered, such as showing off your TV?”

And laser focus of aggression towards Kimmel Jay is a sign of entertainment overhwelming support his colleagues and the public is showing about Conan O’Brien, who feel slighted by Leno. Through the exchange of Lino – Kimmel, interrogation, most of them went like this:

The president laid out the efforts underway in Haiti including search and rescue teams already on the ground and an airlift to deliver water and medicine — as well as the help still on the way, like elements of the Army’s 82nd airborne division — set to arrive today — the Marine Expeditionary Unit and the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Carl Vinson, and the Navy’s hospital ship, the Comfort, which are being deployed.

“I want to say that our hearts go out to the United Nations, which has experienced one of the greatest losses in its history,” the president said. “We have no doubt that we can carry on the work that was done by so many of the U.N. effort that have been lost, and we see that their legacy is Haiti’s hope for the future.”

Flanked by Vice President Joe Biden and members of his national security team, including Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, U.N.
